課程概述

「世界史三（World History III）」為歷史系必修課程，就時代範圍設定而言，乃介於1450年至1800年的近代世界史。每個國家各有其認識世界、乃至書寫世界史與教授世界史課程的歷史脈絡，對於世界範圍的認知、什麼是值得探究的對象與議題、探究的切入角度、意義與價值的詮釋上也因時代變遷而有所更易。近代史上西歐的躍進表現成為台灣過去大學西洋史課程以及隨後改名為世界史課程在講授此時期歷史時首要的認識對象，本課程亦同。當前歷史知識乃得之於整體學術社群不斷對話下的集體性成果，也為新的研究奠基可能開展的基礎。歐美社會在二次世界大戰後對於自身殖民侵略與排斥異己歷史的長期反省效應下，史家們開始關注過往社會內部成員之間、跨地區接觸經驗中的衝突與調適、區隔與交流，以多元文化觀點取代統治菁英史觀與歐洲中心主義的意識形態。本課程透過省思上述台灣之世界史課程的歷史脈絡以及當代歐美史學反省脈絡，將一方面帶領同學了解近代史上前往接觸歐陸以外世界的西歐，其政治、社會、經濟、文化與智識活動領域以及彼此牽扯交織的情形，另方面為同學解說當代史學社群對於相關課題的問題討論，以培養學生不僅於歷史知識層面上、同時於人文現象之探究與思辨層面上更寬廣的視野。 

課程目標
 本課程透過省思台灣之世界史課程的歷史脈絡以及當代歐美史學反省脈絡，將一方面帶領同學了解近代史上前往接觸歐陸以外世界的西歐，其政治、社會、經濟、文化與智識活動領域以及彼此牽扯交織的情形，另方面為同學解說當代史學社群對於相關課題的問題討論，以培養學生不僅於歷史知識層面上、同時於人文現象之探究與思辨層面上更寬廣的視野。

 欲修本門課者務必出席第一週並參加第二週開始的討論課。

二、第十一週請同學選定期末書面作業的議題選項（有三個選項），第十三週進行報告與討論，第十七週繳交書面報告。
歐美史學界對於啓蒙運動的研究視角以及議題自二十世紀晚期開始改變，如從過去專注思想本身，開始注意啓蒙運動的生產環境、制度與動態的傳播過程，或是從聚焦於男性，注意女性的啓蒙運動參與，或是從法國，考量法國以外地區的啓蒙運動。
一、期末報告將呈現同學對啓蒙運動思想以及傳播環境兩個面向的歷史認識。
首先，請閱讀Peter Gay的《啓蒙運動（下）：自由之科學》一書，範圍從第七章、第八章、第九章、第十章中選兩章閱讀並作重點摘要。其次，請對照Peter Gay書中第五章有關贊助人與閱聽大眾的討論（頁278-285）以及Robert Darnton的 〈書籍引發革命嗎？〉（“Do Books Cause Revolutions?”, in The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France. New York: W.W. Norton, 1995, pp. 169-246，有中譯本），指出Robert Darnton的核心要旨、論證要點，以及闡述你個人的心得。
二、期末報告呈現同學對法國以外啓蒙運動的歷史認識：
請閱讀Roy Porter, The creation of the modern world : the untold story of the British Enlightenment (New York: Norton, 2000)一書、摘要重點，並根據此書，討論Robert Darnton在George Washington’s False Teeth : An Unconventional Guide to the Eighteenth Century (New York: W.W. Norton, 2003，有中文翻譯版)對於啓蒙運動史研究觀點的看法，並闡述自己的心得、想法。
三、期末報告呈現同學對女性參與啟蒙運動的歷史認識：
請閱讀Dena Goodman, The Republic of Letters : A Cultural History of the French Enlightement (Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 1994)一書， 摘要重點。

問題導向閱讀與分析討論課的文獻資料方向
一、基本型問題：
文獻資料的撰寫者（或作者）是何人、寫作年代為何、何地寫的？
文獻資料是什麼類型？私人性還是公開性的？文學作品還是政治文件？何時公諸於世？以什麼傳播管道與出版形式公諸於世？
文獻資料的目標讀者是誰？
文獻資料的主要論點為何？
文獻資料顯示作者的用意何在？
文獻資料揭示了相關社會與時代的什麼問題？
二：在上述基本型問題的基礎上，形塑議題性的問題，以及形塑能夠將兩份文本進行比較的問題。
以第一份文獻資料為範例：葡萄牙人最初是如何描繪幾內亞之地？作者雖然沒有細部說明，但我們可於字裡行間識別當地居民是如何回應葡萄牙人？這些反應的原因何在？作者又是如何描繪幾內亞的男人與女人？在作者企圖說服讀者當地居民卑賤上，論點有什麼特質？這份文獻資料是否可以被解讀成是為了正日益強大的國家所做的政治宣傳？
